PAD is three of Australia’s foremost improvisers, Jim Denley, Alto Sax/Flutes (Machine for Making Sense), Chris Abrahams, piano and synthesiser (the Necks) and Daryl Pratt, extended Vibraphone (AtmaSphere, Sonic Fiction, The Chad Wackerman Group). Jim and Chris have been musicking together since the early 1980s, but never in an ongoing formal group. In late 2024 Daryl approached Jim after seeing him play in concert, and in 2025 the two began regularly jamming, instantly developing duo playing that excited them both. They had faith that Chris would complete the group. They found that the trio’s co-creation – making relational a wide range of musical influences and instrumental colours in the unfolding of improvised ‘real time composition’- became more than the sum of any parts. Playing together was immersively enjoyable. The music they create is a sonic kaleidoscope of the unexpected – swirling tones, rhythms, colours, textures, structures, references, and energies. Listening back to their recordings they were surprised and excited by the results. They think audiences will be too.
